Research/ Inspiration

  • This is a scale range where bulk as well as height matters and it can be awkward to mix inhabitants that are, in theory, nearly the same scale. True half-scale houses are currently available from Real Good Toys, and Town Square distributes an ever-widening variety of furniture sets. Adults should be about 3" tall.

  • Smaller Marx tin litho dollhouses are approximately this size, as is most of the associated furniture. There was also a half-scale Petite Princess knock-off. Both the Littles (1980s) and Liddle Kiddles/Storykins (1960s-1970s) can fit half-scale. The Department 56 Snow Village is approximately half-scale, although there is not a perfect scale match between figures, houses, and accessories.

  • Bully, Papo, and Plastoy historic miniatures are approximately 1:20 (meaning they'll work with 1:24 or 1:18 if you're careful), while Calico Critters, Sylvanian Families, Mapletown animals, and Playmobil are a wide 1:22.5. Some craft-store jointed animals are also about 1:22.5.

  • For vehicles, 1:24 model cars are very common, ranging from pricey kits to $4.99 cuties sold at gift stands. Tonka, Nylint, and possibly other toy truck makers make lots of cool trucks.

  • Ordinary "G" gauge trains, buildings, and accessories are 1:25, while II (two gauge) and LGB "G" gauge trains, buildings, and accessories are a slightly bulkier 1:22.5.

  • Roombox size for this scale is approximately 8" W x 6" H x 5-1/2" D. Check your local tobacco shop - many cigar boxes are the right size for roomboxes, and some shops will give them to you for free or for $1 or $2.

Size examples

  • Ceilings will be about 5" high (ceilings are proportionately higher in this scale to let you get your hands into the rooms).

  • Doors will be about 3-1/4" high.

  • Adult dolls will be about 3" tall.

  • Rooms will usually be 5" to 6" deep.

  • Greenleaf's  Fairfield 1:24. So was the Victorianna (now out of production), a half-scale version of the McKinley.

Tips/Hints

  • Jewelry findings can be used for a multitude of things like trays, frames, a bead with a seed bead on top for a perfume bottle, small bangle bead on top of an earing post for a candle and holder.
  • Flat buttons can be used also for many things like plates, frames, or shank buttons with shank removed can be used for wall decorations.
  • Printies can be printed at 50 percent and they become half scale. Jim's printies has printies already sized for 1:24. My Small Obesession has web addresses for printies and other things
  •  Try using cigarette papers, you know the ones you use to roll your own. If moistened just the tiniest bit they can be stuck on easily and the paper pushed into tiny folds, back and forth. When dry coat with a little purl coloured acrylic paints. The end result is like voluptuous satin.
