Research/ Inspiration

Tips/Hints

  • For colored sugar crystals  - look for fine sand from the craft store in the kids section.

  • Substitutes for dragées, the little silver, gold and colored metallic sugar balls used to decorate cakes and cookies -  use tiny metallic micro beads the big box craft stores sell in the stamp or scrap-booking section. Look for the multicolored mixes to get three or more colors in small amounts.
  • Butter Cream and Marshmallow icings -  use one of the tiny tipped glue bottles . These are great for making icing dots. Add a bit of Modge-Podge  to acrylic paint to thicken it, or some glue to make it glossier and use the same up and down technique you use to make dots to cover cakes.

  • Glaze Icings - for glazes that look like gilding,  use a bit of Jacquard pearlex powder in PVA glue or gloss acrylic. For those hard colored icings that look a bit sheer, mix up a bit of liquid Fimo with some colored polymer clay until it gets syrupy, then bake it on the polymer clay cookies.

  • Coconut and some sugar finishes - look in the scrap-booking store for very fine white ' micro glitters' which aren't actually very glittery, more like very fine snow, and work quite well.  Some white embossing powders would probably work as well if you don't heat them up!  For longer coconut strands use baked white or translucent white clay and one of those two inch cheese graters

  • Candy molds in small shapes can be filled with plaster of paris or filled with Sculpy/Fimo and baked and painted for 'cakes' and 'desserts'.  Tip:  Lightly rub a very tiny amount of glycerin with a small brush so it will easily drop out.
