Miniature Door Tips/Hints

Screen Door

  • Tulle for petticoats -Cut a piece of that and spray both sides with silver spray paint. Brush some gray across it for age or a dab of brown for rust.
  • Use stamping ink to color tulle. Just use one of those cheap triangle shaped sponges that are made for putting on makeup. Black ink maybe followed by one of the Perfect Pearls pigments (to give it a metal shine- if desired) would work out really nicely.
  • Silk gauze to look in scale would probably be 72 or 90 count
  • Also, try tights.

Hanging a Door with Pins

  • The pin-hinge technique is used to hang doors in a dollhouse. A hinge can be added later for appearance rather than function. Often hinge screws are just not deep enough for some woods. Sometimes the wood splits and sometimes wear and tear causes the screws to fall out.
  • Determine which way the door will open.Sand the door rounded on the side which opens out. Mark corresponding places on the door and threshold for placement of the pins.
  • Drill a hole in the threshold, (exactly where the pin will go into the door) so that the pin can go into the door and be secured to the floor. Use good strong dressmaking pins for this. This will allow for years of opening the door.If your wood is not too good. Place a grommet in both locations. .There are real fine grommets you can use. This is double protection for the pin hinge.
  • The top pin hinge fits between the wall and the door frame on the side to which the door opens.
  • Do a Google search for door pivot to illustrate this method.
