Book of Medieval People - by Eileen Edna Powell, 2004. talks about the real medieval life. AND the people who
lived those lives in exquisite detail. Everything from what they ate, howthey ate it, from the time of the end of the Roman empire until the more modern times. A fascinating look into personal lives - such as Marco Polo and his adventures, etc

Tips/Hints

Chain Metal

  • use the rubber shelf liner from the grocery store for armor. It's the right scale and it comes in silver gray color.

  • knitting using a stockinette stitch(knit a row, pearl a row) on the reverse side gives a real chain mail effect, and it can be spray painted silver. If you do not knit, you can make the sleeves, and tunic portion from a sock or a loose baby knit.
  • look for a heat glove in the hardware store that has a metal lining in it. The "chain metal" insert can be removed and used for armor. Or non-metalliic scourer sponges from the supermarket.
  • For a piece of chain mail that was spilling from a trunk- cut a generalized chest shape out of cardstock and painted it a silvery brown. Then coat it with glue and just lay small lengths of jewelry chain back and forth across to fill in the shape. When it was thoroughly dry, give it a dirty water wash and then snip off the extensions. With a coat of glue on the back, shape it over the edge of the trunk. It looks pretty convincing, especially since a really nice helmet to go with it was included. Everything is illusion, if one sees armor and a weapon, once thinks "chain mail."
  • use a cocktail sword for a weapon
