Red pigment is not as opaque as other pigment so it doesn't cover very well. It does stain well.
Too many coats of paint will make the surface gooey. So sand off or otherwise clean off the gooey red Then give the wood one coat of medium or dark grey base coat. Let it dry well. Paint your red over that. The grey will make the red cover better and need only one or two coats of red to look ok.
