Miniature Sign Tips/Hints
- You can buy bags of dried alphabet pasta (for making alphabet soup). These letters are just the right size to make signs with 3 dimensional letters. Glue to piece of wood and paint.
-
Make a neon sign: Pipe hot glue on to waxed paper (just like writing on a cake). When cool, peel off and paint the back with glass stain. There is a product named Krystal Kleer in plastic model stores. It dries as clear as glass. Try this for even more realistic effect. When your glue gun’s nozzle opening is too big, heat up the gun, unscrew the nozzle, clean out and insert the metal tip of a ball point pen into the nozzle. This will give you a smaller opening.

For tiny clear labels, use the clear mailing labels from Avery, which cost about $13 for a box of 30 sheets (450 large labels). Set the labels up using either a drawing or word processing program so that multiple labels print on each of the big labels (or even just 4-6 on one big label) leaving the rest of the page blank and after printing the document out in draft and checking the placement against the label sheet, print it off using the best quality setting. As a full row of labels gets used up, cut the sheet across the top, but if it's only one or two labels, peel the printed labels off carefully then cut them into the desired sizes , so the rest of the row can be used the next time. HINT: If you have placed the mini labels really close together to get as much as possible on each label, you may want to press the entire label onto a piece of waxed paper or cooking parchment before cutting the mini labels apart. This will hold them flat and stop them from sticking to your scissors or craft knife, without removing the adhesive.
- All Avery labels have a number. When you tell your printer that you are setting it on "labels," it will ask you for that number. Insert that number, and the number should set your machine to the correct setting for printing that type of label. If it doesn't, then that type of label may not be meant for your type of printer. (ink jet printers will not print on labels meant for laser printers)
-
Consider clear decals (for either ink-jet or laser printers), available at Hobbytown USA, and most model railroad shops. There are also cling type window decals that stick to glass, windows and other smooth surfaces and are removable, seen at Office Depot in a pack of 10.
- Print on a address label sheet, or use a Xyron sticker maker.
