Miniature Art Deco projects in dollhouses, roomboxes and dioramas

Arts & Crafts is different than Art Deco and both are different from Art Nouveau. And it takes some time and research to learn the differences!

  • Art Nouveau (1890-1905) features natural forms, lots of curves and curlicues. Think of artwork by Mucha. Architecture by Gaudi of Spain. Furniture by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
  • Arts & Crafts (Turn of the century 1890-1910 with influence clear into the 30's)) Frank Lloyd Wright, Gustav Stickley, and Pre-Raphaelites art, etc.
  • Art Deco Style (1925-1940) is geometric and very modern. Erte designs.

Art Deco Research/ Inspiration

  • Films: The Thin Man, Poirot
  • Art Deco was a popular international art design movement from 1925 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional, and modern.
  • The movement was a mix of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. Source: Wikipedia
  • Many miniaturists ignore having bathrooms in their miniature homes but an Art Deco bathroom could be considered a work of art and should definitely have a place in any home of that time period. Mint green was one of the most popular colors during the Art Deco era. Extensive use of tiles on the walls and floors were very popular. Those that were remodeling their older homes in the new popular decorating style elevated the floor adjacent to the bathtub so that the bathtub appeared sunken. Bathtubs were also enclosed on three sides.
