Bed Linen and Towel Sizes -by Wanna in El Paso

Tips/Hints

  • Find a cardboard jewelry box that is about 6" long and the right width for a twin, double, queen, or king sized bed.  Turn the bottom of the box upside down. Add turned toothpicks or extra stair spindles (shortened) for legs.  Glue the legs just inside the corners of the box.  Add a piece of foam on top. Dress the bed using scraps of fabric or one of Jim Collins' printable quilts. No sewing required. Glue the corners down, and glue your pillows shut.
  • If you get really creative, don't put legs on your bed or dress it yet.  Find four cocktail straws (the skinny ones).  Trim to about 4" or whatever looks good.  Paint them or cover them in fabric.  Glue them inside the 4 corners of the top part of the jewelry box.  This time, though, glue the straws to the outside corners of the bottom part of the cardboard jewelry box and about 1/4" past those corners. You have a canopy bed!  The straws end up being both the legs and the canopy posts (glued OUTSIDE the corners of the bottom part of the box that is upside down and INSIDE the corners of the top part of the box).  Dress your bed with foam, bedding, pillows, etc.  Cover the canopy in fabric that coordinates with the bedding.  Add some lace around the edges.  Put the same lace around the bottom part of the bed for a dust ruffle.
  • Slip into the kid's or grandkid's toys.  Get a plastic car about 8" long. Cut off the top.  Cut a cardboard to fit the interior.  Pad.  Make a pillow and a bedspread or quilt, and use the steering wheel and dash as a headboard decoration.  Think bunk bed for double-decker bus.
  • For a dollhouse waterbed,  fill a balloon with sand to make a flexible bed. Or, instead of a sand filled balloon, you could use a Baking Soda filled balloon.  This would give it a "softer" feel and a more flexible surface.  You could also use this tip for stuffing a "favorite old overstuffed chair" and then push it with your finger in the spots that would have taken the most wear from years of sitting!  To fill with sand or baking soda....stretch the neck of the balloon over the small end of a small funnel.  Then, hold the funnel upright while you pour in the desired amount of sand or baking soda.  When filled with desired amount (don't over-fill)...gently pull balloon off of funnel and tie a knot in the end. Put the knot on the bottom of the chair/sofa/waterbed so that it does not show.
  • For a bed with the head against a wall, use a block of Styrofoam the size of a 'double' mini bed.  Pin or glue a ruffled or pleated skirt around three sides.  Put a cover of some kind with the edges coming down about 1/4" to 1/2" to cover the top of the skirt.  Instead of a headboard put two lacy pillows leaning against the wall.
  • Fluffy but thin powder puffs can make floor rugs. Just add fringe (grosgrain ribbon,  pull some of the threads off).  Check through all your scraps of material and make rugs.  Just add Wonder-under or any type of press-on interfacing for stability.
  • For chair legs, or turned bedpost spindles, use inexpensive paint handles cut to size. Or use pre-made stair or railing spindles.

  • Get foam rubber from the upholstery area of the fabric store. Comes in various thicknesses.
