use craft sand in different colors for texture in baked goods, available in $stores and craft shops.
icing for cakes, cookies, pie filling, chocolate sauce, ice cream, cinnamon buns etc... use TLC ( translucent liquid Sculpey) added to eyeshadow powder. Mix different powder colors for different icing colors.
for powdered or icing sugar, scribble soft white pastel on scrap paper to create a fine dust to be used as icing sugar. Varnish top of the item with a very light coat of matt varnish. Using a large soft brush pick up a good quantity of pastel dust and holding brush above varnished item, tap the handle so that dust falls onto item - don’t let brush touch item. When dry, seal the ‘sugar’ with hairspray, holding about 1 foot from the item.
add some sand to texture paint and acrylic paint for icing
bathtub caulking can be used for icing
crushed apricot seeds for crumbs
round wood plugs sold by Home Depot for woodworkers look like a cake or cupcakes. Find them in a craft store with the wooden articles such as circles and flowerpots. Sizes vary - 1" and 3/4" would be good for 1" scale cakes, 1/2" and 3/8 for cupcakes and large muffins. Paint and decorate with puff paint.
print the round cake tops (from Jim's minis below) on a transparency (or just regular paper) and cut them out. Cover a bottle cap with spackle for icing making sure the top is smooth then glue the top to the top of your “cake”. Or use a slice of dowel rather than a bottle top.
cake stand - take 2 paper plates, one smaller, one larger. Glue beads on the bottom of the larger one for feet. Fold thin wire in half, and form a handle shape at the top fold. Thread some beads onto the wire, insert the wire through the center of the smallest plate, thread more beads onto the wire and insert through the larger plate.
Looking for a cake stand? Try a sewing machine bobbin. Put a doily or circular piece of paper on the top before adding your cake. The clear one's sort of look like glass.
Small plastic suction cups (1" or less) make good cake pedestals, cut fancy paper doily to fit. The metal clasp is easily removed with pliers.
Save the clear tops from bottles of syrup for cake plate cover. Place a bead on top for a handle.
Icing - instead of the usual caulking, try equal parts Mod-podge and cornstarch for a buttercream style frosting. Use a couple of drops of paint to tint.
Take a good look at the brown plastic inserts in chocolate boxes -- looked at upside down some of the shapes resemble cakes. Cut out around them and drizzle with pastel nail polish so it runs down the sides, then decorate with chocolate sprinkles or tiny flowers. Mounted on bits of cardboard cut to fit they look good on bakeshop shelves.
