Miniature Christmas trees and other tree projects in dollhouses, roomboxes and dioramas
Were the Christmas trees first introduced in Germany? They were introduced to England by Prince Albert, the German consort of Queen Victoria. Instead of electric light, candles lit the tree. Can you imagine how carefully that would have to be done to avoid catastrophe?

Victorian Christmas Tree - by Wanna in El Paso. She made miniature nosegays, or tussie-mussie type ornaments, using very small circles cut from lace yardage, but little laser paper doilies would work well, too. In fact, using various hole punches and decorative cutting scissors you could make some intriguing doilies of your own.

Tips/Hints
- Paper garland - Make a 30” long chain for one 6” tree. Cut strips of red, white & green construction paper 1/8” wide. Cut these strips into 7/8” long pieces. Take one piece and glue ends together, overlapping slightly. (if you overlap too much you will have an oval.) Take a second piece of another color, slide one end into the first completed circle. (Use a G crochet hook for this) - slide the hook into the first circle and then glue those ends together. Repeat with the alternating colors.
- Popcorn garland - use packing Styrofoam with small beads stuck together. Pull small pieces from the Styrofoam so they resemble scale size popcorn. Touch up with.pale yellow paint. Thread the "popcorn" onto the thread, alternating with red seed beads Use to decorate an "old fashioned" Christmas tree.
- To make garlands for decoration, take some green chenille stems - pipe cleaners (lovely because they can be bent into shape) using some white acrylic paint, dab here and there along the tips of the green, bend into required shape and decorate with beads, tiny red ribbon bows and glitter of choice to create the mood. Glue to your project and add any other pieces you want.
- Needling Ya - uses for those RL tree needles from Littleroomers
- Tinsel - think the tendency of lamé to ravel is a pain? the threads look exactly like a scale version of old-fashioned tree tinsel.
- Tiny angels can be made with flower trumpet beads or paper cones, with tiny bead heads, wings either cut by hand or punched and fuse wire halos, use 'snow' to give the wings a feathery look and also around the bottom of the cones, or alternatively use sequin circles and glue to the back of the bead head for halo. Glue an open 'book' or hymn sheet to the front in gold or silver colours to match halo and trimmings.
Alternatively they can be made from gold paper. White, gold or silver snowflake peel-offs would also work nicely using a similar method to the stars, they might need a bit more glue on them if wire is down the centre, can also make tree ornaments with them.
- A tiny but very slim painted cone could be used slide a bead down the cone when dry as far as it will go and glue in place to make one of those modern spires for the top of the tree. Can paint with gold, silver or metallic paint and add some glitter or other tiny decorations. Something like one of these. If not putting on a tree, the top of a toothpick would work well and you could stand them on your market stall with other designs and colours.
Using the cone idea again paint red, add a face, add white flocking face to create a beard and add arms painted red with pink hands or black gloves trimmed with flocking and you will have a Santa topper. This one will give you some ideas. In the smaller scales just use paint to give details.
