Important Seasonal holidays in Egypt

What are the most important holidays?

  • Shem al Nessim: this festival marks the beginning of the spring season and is celebrated on the first Monday after Coptic Easter. Typically Egyptians head for beauty spots to enjoy picnics and outdoor activities. (April)
  • South Sinai Camel Festival: Egyptians celebrate the animal that is such an integral part of their culture with a range of activities, the most popular of which is camel racing; head for the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for the liveliest events. (May)
  • Ramadan: celebrated by the country’s Muslim population, Ramadan lasts the entire month and is a period of abstinence from food, drink, cigarettes and sexual activity. (December)
  • Eid al-Fitr: the end of Ramadan is marked by a festival which sees high spirits among locals, plenty of feasting and family get-togethers as well as the ritual slaughter of sheep and goats.
