Fireplace tips/Hints

  • Use aquarium charcoal for pieces of coal or charcoal in a grill. Plastic wrap colored with red, yellow and orange permanent markers and twisted up can be used for flames, and probably aluminum foil also. A bulb placed strategically can add to the effect, and there are flickering orange lights for fireplaces that are for use on a twelve-volt system, but if not wired separately, will cause any other lights on the same run to flicker also. Dried twigs make a nice wood fire, and some can be charred by carefully burning them a little to blacken before adding to the fireplace.
  • Add some model railroad gravel to your acrylic paint to achieve stone texture on a wood fireplace. To make your fireplace, use another box. Draw the pit on the front with the fire and then cover the rest with small stones from your driveway.

  • Collect twigs for logs, cut to size. Try using fluorescent paint to simulate flames. Or cut flames from fireplace adds and insert between logs or at the back of the fireplace.
