Miniature Haunted House Tips/Hints
Outside
- cobwebs using UHU glue, the kind that leaves long thin strings just when you don't want it to, but those strings make great cobwebs You just touch the top of the tube to where you want the web to start then gently pull away to the next contact point, then back and forth as much as you want. Open the vacuum cleaner (Ugh!) and put some dust on your open palm and blow it onto the web and the furniture in the attic - very effective. .. Consider the acrylic stuffing for pillows. A piece about the size of a quarter will make 3 -5 webs for windows / doors.
- broken/crooked window, boarded up
- burnt out candles,
- things floating in the air and transparent figures
- one person looking in a mirror but two reflections, or a person looking in the mirror but no reflection, ghost coming out of the mirror/wall
- jagged hole in the roof
- house shades of grey and black
- an ugly brown stain running down the interior wall to show water damage.
- mix textured paint of "snow" with green paint to simulate moss
- plank nailed across the front door "keep out!", door hanging off one hinge
- crumbled newspapers, tumbleweed and leaves blowing around
Interior
- herb drying room with beamed ceiling, stocked with potions
- work table with spellbook and candle
- fireplace
- witches cauldron
- rusty utensils
- Halloween hutch with crooked shelves
- bed draped with black cheescloth
- lots of dust!
- assorted witches, mummies, and other weird and wonderful characters
- man eating plant (from the Little Shop of Horrors)
- wrong way witch
- used dryer sheets make great curtains!
- use the concept of Disney's Haunted Mansion as inspiration, create dancing ghosts like in the Mansion. Find a copyright-free image of Victorian couples waltzing on the web and load it into a editing program. Isolate each couple, then print each image onto printer-friendly transparencey film. Add color to them with stained glass paint (on the unprinted side - the paint smears the ink) and cut them out. Suspend each cutout from the ceiling with transparent thread so they were just barely above the floor. With the slightest breeze, they dance!
