Mold Research/ Inspiration

Mold Tips/Hints

  • To convert a plaster mold into a press mold, it must be sealed until no longer porous. Open the mold and spray Armorall Leather Spray inside both parts of the mold. Do this in the morning and again at night. Repeat the spraying for another 3 or 4 days. The mold will become extremely hard and you can now use it as a press mold. (If you try to do this without sealing the nside with the Armorall, you will pull out some of the detail each and every time that you pull the polymer clay pieces out.) Keep in mind that Polyclay shrinks less that porcelain, so choose smaller molds such as Dawn Adams, Doreen Sinnett or Mystic Molds..
  • Old molds can be used for experimentation or Polymer clay projects. or dolls which don't  need much detail, such as dead bodies in a detective scene. Think about using them for instructions as to how to pour molds.
  • To fix broken molds,. use condensed milk. Glue tends to interfere with water absorbtion of the water from the slip as it dries, and affects the casing  Tthe condensed milk does not, and it works. ..Buy some Regular Canned Evaporated Milk. (the non-fat or low fat will not work it has to be regular) Carnation or Pet are fine. With a new, clean brush, carefully put some of the milk on both sides of the break. (Make sure you don't get any of the milk inside of the mold.) If you do the mold will no longer be porous and you won't be able to remove the castings. Put the mold aside until it is dry. Repeat step number 2 two or three more times. The last time you brush on the milk, put the broken pieces together and gently press and hold.(You better make sure that when you do this the broken pieces are perfectly lined up,because you will not be to separate them). Put your mold aside, let it dry and your mold is like new.
