Miniature Shabby Chic (cottage style) projects for dollhouses, roomboxes and dioramas

Shabby Chic is a feminine soft and cosy style, incorporating well worn but loved items into decor. Colours are pastel, like the various shades of peony, and faded peach and turquoise with pale grey and white mixed in.

Willow Cottage - This is a 1:48 kit by Laser Dollhouse Design, completed by Kristie in Indiana. Most of the furniture were laser kits by Sharon Goldsmith. "I also experimented with wildflowers that I picked late this last fall. I liked the size, so decided to dry them just in case..... After they were dried, I sprayed them heavily with hairspray, and stored them away. I thought they might be the right size, so painted a few and yes, they were perfect for Willow Cottage"

Research/ Inspiration

  • items: heavily painted with many layers showing through obviously worn areas.
  • fabrics: cottons and linens, inspired by old French linens, bleached and faded
  • colors: whites and worn/bleached out pastels
  • Popular decor items: pillows, chenille bedspreads, vintage chandeliers, and anything with roses on it.
  • a soft, relaxed feminine romantic way of decorating that looks comfortable and inviting.

Tips/Hints

Ideas about what is needed for these projects

  • To get a vintage look and tone down colours, use the wrong side of fabric, asmany fabrics look too intense in miniature. As well, a thin coat of white wash over fabrics, pressing out most of the liquid on the brush first will soften colours.. Sometimes just dry brushing works, depending on the coarseness and/or thickness of the fabric.

Sounds crazy but just brushing on baby powder with a soft makeup brush softens the intensity of certain fabrics, too. Experiment on scraps before trying a new technique on the actual item.
