Research/ Inspiration

Tips/Hints

  • For three steps up to the front porch where the opening against which the steps will sit is 5 inches wide:

Cut a block of wood 2/3" thick by 5" long by 3" wide

Cut a 2nd block of wood 2/3" thick by 5" long by 2" wide

Cut a 3rd block of wood 2/3" thick by 5" long by 1" wide

(This will make you three risers equivalent to 8" risers in RL)

Pile them on top of each other with all lining up along one of the 5" lengths. Glue and clamp together. Now you have your base.

Finish them with basswood strips as steps. You can round one edge of each and allow each to hang over the edge of the riser slightly. Stain or paint the whole or just the tops.

To anchor railing, drill a tiny pinhole where each post will sit. Using a sharp wire cutter, cut the sharp tip of a dressmaker's pin off so that the cut piece is about 1/3 to 1/4" long. Put glue in your drilled hole.

Tap the blunt end of the cut piece of the pin into your drilled hole. Allow the glue to dry.

Next, take a ready-made spindle and place glue on the bottom end. Gently press it down onto the pin making sure that it is vertical. (You might have to drill a tiny starter hole in the spindle to be sure it does not split) Let the glue dry.

You may want to finish your spindle before or paint it after it is in place.

When all the spindles are in place and glued securely, cut a ready-made handrail longer than needed. Hold it in place so you can figure the angle you will need to cut at the top end so the rail will sit square with the top baluster. Cut that end slightly long and then whittle it down to a perfect fit with an X-Acto knife and sandpaper.

  • Make a staircase with a 3-step landing like the one in All in the Family. Simply take a full staircase and cut it up. Cut off the three steps and create a landing from a piece of scrap basswood, butt the remaining staircase at an angle to ascend the rest of the way.
