Research/ Inspiration

Tips/Hints

  • Skiving leather - try wrapping your leather around a small flat block and use a belt sander to make your leather thinner
  • Look in thrift stores for kid leather gloves
  • A good source of imitation leather: check-book and appointment book covers
  • Masking tape resembles leather, good for small projects, rub with shoe polish.
  • Make a waistband for your pants or skirt and glue to the garment. Make a leather belt, glue belt loops onto the belt, wrapping the ends around to the back of the belt. Glue the belt with the loops to the waist band. This is really easy and looks great. You do have to mark the waistband for the loop positions and transfer these to the belt, and beware - the belt can stretch, so be gentle. For the loops use Fabri-Tac on the wrong side, then slice thin strip with a blade.
  • To get nice round edges on small strips of leather (like for a belt) use a lighter CAREFULLY on the edges. Burn off the little corners, just a little bit and you'll end up with a nice round edge. Practice first on some scraps.
  • If real leather is too thick, take silk and paint with acrylic paint. Finish with gloss to resemble leather .
  • Look for faux leather clothing at the flea market, or faux leather lined with paper in paper or book binding shops. Good for luggage and bags.
  • Paint fabric with a light coat of Gesso. When dry, paint with the color of your choice. When dry, use an antiquing gel/stain to give it a leather look.
  • Assemble freezer paper or brown paper bags, Modge Podge (Gloss or matte), white tacky glue, brown wood stain gel in a suitable shade.Tear the paper into irregular shapes and sizes. Crumple the paper up into a ball and open it up repeatedly. The more wrinkles the more it looks like old leather. Apply glue to the item. Flatten the paper into the glue, overlapping edges repeat until box or item is covered. Let glue dry. (usually over night). Using an old rag, pick up a bit of the gel stain and rub into the paper giving just a nice glow of stain. Let dry and Modge Podge this, using either gloss or matte.
  • For smaller items like shoes, try ripping tissue paper into small pieces. Then glue onto shoes and boots, let dry and paint to look like leather. Or create a patchwork leather jacket.
