Miniature courtesans, tramps, mistresses, madams and their houses of Ill Repute  for dollhouses, roomboxes and dioramas

The oldest profession, courtesans are always fascinating and notorious. Miniaturists recreate Western scenes with "those  rooms" above saloons, as well as modern versions.

Research/ Inspiration

  • In John Cleland's Fanny Hill: or, the Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, Fanny goes from poor orphaned country girl to wealthy skilled courtesan eventually finding her one true love and retiring to marriage. Her history is told in the first person through several letters to friends detailing her life as a courtesan.
  • The Broadway plays, musicals, and movies based upon the book Gigi are about a young Parisian girl who is being trained to be a courtesan by her great-aunt, a retired career courtesan herself.
  • Satine played by Nicole Kidman, an actress/courtesan who falls in love with a penniless poet/writer played by Ewan McGregor, in the movie Moulin Rouge!.
  • The Lady of the Camellias was a novel about a courtesan by French author Alexandre Dumas, and converted to the opera La Traviata by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. In the novel, the courtesan's name is Marguerite Gautier; in the opera, it is "Violetta ValĂ©ry". "La Traviata" in Italian translates "The Wayward One".

Geisha's aren't courtesans/prostitutes! Please delete all things calling them in this meaning.

Hotazuru,
Thank you for setting us straight! One of the wonderful things about the mini world is that we can learn so much more about each other. Admittedly some of this knowledge is not exactly accurate, because the item is the artist's interpretation.
We still include these items in the wiki for their artistic value, while recognizing they are not authentic. Take a look at the Canadian page - Aleeta Kent's wonderful Indian Chief is authentic, while the First Nations lady with the travois is the artist's interpretation. North Americans would probably know that, whereas someone on the other side of the world would not.
A new page has been created for geisha. Would you be kind enough to add a short introduction and any appropriate links you feel would be helpful to miniaturists planning to create a geisha project.
Have you designed a geisha project yourself? Can you share it with us?

Yes yes, but these are so big differences, that they cannot be so accepted.
I will be more than happy to write a little bit about geishas there. And some sites will be added ^^
