Miniature Plate Tips/Hints

  • Plates from polymer clay - make a roll of clay slightly smaller than desired diameter, place in fridge fro about 20 min, then slice very thin with a blade. Place on baking surface, indent the centre with the flat tip of a pencil eraser, or anything with a flat round end.  The sides will rise slightly to resemble a plate. Bake according to the package directions in a PRE-HEATED oven, then shut the oven off and leave inside to cool to room temperature with the oven door ajar. Or remove from oven, lift each plate gently and slide into a bowl of very cold water. Leave in the water until thoroughly cooled. (Both methods make the plates less likely to break).
  • If you want fancier plates, Google 'polymer clay cane patterns online' for all sorts of cane work ideas. You can make plates with coloured rims, add designs in the centre, leaves, a single rose, a holiday motif,
  • To create inexpensive and unique plates, go to http://replaceyourplates.co.uk/. You can choose from many different patterns. Copy and paste onto your computer. Print onto photo paper or high gloss paper.
  • Need a coloured rim? Roll the edge of a plate on a stamp pad.
