Tips/Hints
- Grouting - use a rubber grouting trowel, which can be purchased at any store that sells tile or grout. Mix enough grout to a consistency of a thick sour cream using a putty knife, and use the putty knife to glop the grout onto the tiles. Spread the grout with the trowel, pressing it into the spaces going diagonally over the tiles. If you try and push the grout in going horizontally or vertically the grout will not stay in the gaps. Grout is cheap so use enough to fill all the spaces. Don't worry about getting all the grout off of the tiles at this time. An important thing to remember is to let the grout set up for about 25-30 minutes before wiping off any excessf, again using a diagonal motion with a clean damp sponge. Don't press too hard or you will remove grout from the gaps. Rinse the sponge between each swipe. Repeat this 2 more times every 25 minutes. Let the grout set up over night and clean one more time with a damp sponge then wipe any residual powder away with a clean dry cloth. If you seal the tiles before grouting, you should have a nice looking floor.
- Glue or stick the tiles to a piece of poster board! It makes it SO much easier than sticking and grouting them directly into the kitchen space. think I wrote "cardboard" last time but it was white poster board). Planning and executing it outside of the space is much more convenient, especially when the floor is not squared!. Just make sure the poster board fits perfectly! You won't see these imperfections once you put in the furniture and little details. Then it only matters that the middle part looks good, so keep looking over the whole piece, and if you need to have bigger gaps, keep it where the furniture will be!
- Use an old fashioned paper cutter to cut the squares.
- For mosaics, outline the pattern on the reverse, then apply to the project.
